Text Box: FAIRFIELD  SAPPHIRE  VALLEY

The riverbank erosion and the lack of sediment transport was due to a dam for a ski intake pump. The result has been heavy erosion and sediment buildup.  This project was designed using bioengineering and geomorphological methods to stabilize and enhance approximately 800 lineal feet of river.  The restoration was achieved through the construction of bankfull benches and rock vanes.  Step-pools were created and root wads installed to improve trout habitat. The riverbank stabilization was accomplished through sloping the river bank at a 2 to 1 ratio and by installing coconut fiber blankets. Finally, the area was planted with native riparian species. The long-term stabilization of this site will be achieved by re-establishing the riparian root system of the understory plant species. The river will now function correctly and move the correct amount of sediment during normal and storm flow events.
