At the Andrews Rest Area, the riverbank erosion was due to a tree falling and changing the flow of the stream. The result has been heavy erosion for approximately six years. This project has been designed using bioengineering and geomorphological methods to stabilize and enhance the river. The restoration was achieved through the construction of a bankfull bench and rock vanes. Step-pools were created and root wads installed to improve trout habitat. Streambank stabilization was accomplished through sloping the river bank at a 2 to 1 ratio and by installing coconut fiber blankets. Finally, the area was planted with native riparian species. The long-term stabilization of this site will be achieved by re-establishing the riparian root system. Such species as American Sycamore, Buttonbush, Dog Hobble, Yellow Root, Silky Dogwood and Henry's Garnet were planted at this site.
